Main Types of Heli Skiing Operators

After deciding that heli skiing is the thing to do for you next winter, you are probably asking yourself which operator to choose and how to assess whether you’ve made the right choice. This is why we will attempt to help you make an informed decision based on your personal preferences in terms of the destination, time of year, and duration of the holiday. While there are more than 100 heliskiing Canada operators, they could be classified into two main groups according to the type of services they offer.

First, there are one-day introductory heli skiing operators, generally located around the large resorts areas or within the resorts themselves. They are particularly targeting piste skiers and try to attract them by giving them the opportunity to try out a different approach to skiing. With these service providers, you can basically pay for a single day of heli skiing or even for a few runs and their main advantage is that they can give you a taste of the sport and let you decide for yourself whether you like it or not. On the other hand, a trial day on the slopes is nothing like a full heli skiing holiday package experience. These operations are the ‘mass’ option of heli skiing and as such are significantly more impersonal, having as a main goal achieving quantity (operating at maximum capacity) rather than quality (reaching maximum customer satisfaction levels). Keep in mind that these services are designed to be experienced for one day only, and it would be a complete waste of money to pay for two or more individual days as compared to a pre-packaged tour. These multi day trips are widely known as destination heli skiing, and they are the second category we will describe today. Providers of such services will also include excellent 3-5 star accommodation, food and beverage, helicopter pick-up and drop off up to a specified vertical limit, professional guides, skiing and safety gear to rent and other services in the price of the holiday. Accommodation is usually provided in lodges situated in remote areas, as operations are generally undertaken well away from the hustle and bustle of ski resorts.

These packages usually include two to six heli skiing days and no more than 30 skiers will be staying at one lodge. Depending on various factors, including duration, package options or group numbers, each operator will decide upon a fair price for the entire trip, so these are the main things you should look for when choosing your service provider.
