Revelstoke Railway Days Starts Today

Revelstoke Railway Days, the annual celebration of everything train here in Revelstoke, British Columbia, starts today. Revelstoke has a long history with rail, and indeed owes its existence to the creation of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the 1880s. This year's event is packed with things to do all the way up until the last day. The celebration will last August 12th through August 17th. This year, the event is also being held in collaboration with Timer Days, resulting in many forestry demonstrations being held throughout the commemoration. Heliskiing Canada

Besides visits and tours of many of Revelstoke's existing rail museums and heritage spots, this year's Railway Days has something special. There will be tours of one of the old logging railway trestle bridges in the Arrow Lakes area. The bridge dates from 1906 when the Arrow Lakes Logging Co. extended a spur line into the wilderness. What is interesting is that the hand cut logs used to make the bridge are now being held up by years of new tree growth; it is truly a spectacular sight to behold. The tours aren't just for rail fans. They also provide for a nice hike into the forest, with a picnic included. Heliskiing BC

Hiking the area around Revelstoke is something that brings many visitors each year, as the trails and sights are really quite fantastic. During the winter hiking slows down a bit, but not to worry, there are still plenty of other activities available for your enjoyment. The main draw during the winter is the famous B.C. snow. Visitors from around the world flock to partake of it every year. One of the best ways to enjoy the powder is a visit to the backcountry via helicopter.
